What he said coincides with Ecclesiastes 1:9 "there is nothing new under the sun". That is how it was translated.
What it means is Christ has always been present to follow.
Perhaps "fell asleep" means made powerless. What would make Father powerless? Rebellious children would.
The plural "fathers" does it not mean those described at Revelation 7:4 and 22:2?
